Friday's Link Folio

It's Friday, and that means links. You know what to do. Kick back with your iPhone, ignore everyone else, and read some stuff.

Award-winning wedding photojournalist Joseph Victor Stefanchik has dedicated an entire blog to his experience with the new Nikon D3.

Did you know the 2007 Unicef Photo of the Year is a wedding photo? Did you know the bride is 11? Click here for the story and here for a larger version of the image.

If you're not up to speed on the Lane Hartwell/Richter Scales/Bubble Video incident, you can read about it here, here, or here.

I love this image series by Jan Von Holleben. Unique and beautiful. I wonder if you could convince a bride and groom to do some of those shots?

Finally, some holiday recipes from my favorite cooking blog.

Good night from Bend.

Don't buy another "template" website. Buy a site from a company whose sites do this.
Cook. Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

I'm looking to book more commercial and food work next year. No weddings to shoot anytime soon. Plus, its Christmas time, and that means food. A perfect storm of pixels and calories, if you will.

If there was daylight this weekend, my gear was out and the oven was on. Cooking. Baking. Styling. Shooting. Tweaking.

Yesterday I made a trip to World Market and found some new props for my collection.

As soon as the flour settles, I'll be updating my website and it will have a (hopefully) decent food gallery. Until then, I'll keep throwing a few here on the blog.

Getting Out

This morning my friend Ande and I strapped on snowshoes and hiked to the summit of Tumalo Mountain (elev. 7,775 ft). It was quite exhilarating and there's something wonderful about being unable to see or hear anything man-made. No cars, roads, power lines, or coffee shops. Just trees, snow, and a bird that scared the tar out of me.

When we reached a clearing at the summit, intense winds swept across the peak–pelting us with snow. We hiked backed down a few yards and took a short break. After eating some gorp, we strapped into our snowboards and descended the mountain.

As much as I love Christ, the christmas season tends to drive me nuts. If Christmas is stressing you out, take half a day and go outside. Get away from everything man-made and get some fresh air. You don't need to philosophize or think deep thoughts. Just surround yourself with some clean air and nature. Just don't tell your wife you'll be home in 2 hours when its really 5.

Time for another collection of time-wasting jetsam and flotsam from around the web.

It's about time. Actually, it's not really time. Some US airlines will offer at least some sort of wi-fi next year. Unfortunately, AA will start with transcontinental flights only, and JetBlue only allows access to Yahoo! mail and messenger (wth?). Virgin America and Alaska have plans, but no dates have been set.

Use PS's Vanishing Point Filter to mock up a business card or printed photograph. Perfect for complementing your prints or albums page.

Flickr users can now edit their own photos right inside the browser. Uses PicNik.

C'mon, elf yourself. You know you want to. Don't be embarrassed, we did it.

Want more PS tutorials? This set from Layers Magazine should keep you busy for a while.

Maggie Hudson shows off a "not so bridal" shoot. At least she didn't call it "Trash the Dress".

Check out Branislav Kropilak's Landings series. Very unique night landscapes.

Our Optimization DVD is Almost Done. Pre-Order Now.

I try to post important SEO tips for photographers as often as I can (and I will continue to do that). Over the last two months we decided to put all our knowledge together and create a DVD.

It's just about ready and I'm excited. The website is live and you can pre-order the DVD now. The DVD will ship this month.

I'm only posting it here for now, so my blog readers will get theirs first.

Rank Higher DVD

There's more cool stuff.

Everyone who purchases a DVD also gets a workbook and checklist in PDF form. When you print it out, it makes optimizing your site much easier.

We also have an optimization forum where you can ask questions and get bonus content that we'll be posting.

Special thanks to Seattle video production company S.J. Savol for the video production and über wedding photographer David Beckstead for the great cover image. I also need to thank Orlando wedding photographer Karla Fountain for volunteering her site to be optimized.

If you have any questions, post them in the comments.
