Happy Birthday Jessica

Today is my oldest daughter's birthday. I can't believe Jessica is already 12. She's one beautiful and talented tweenager - especially considering she had such an inexperienced father raising her for so many years. Here's to you Jessie!

Back From the Brink

Man, I got hammered hard Tuesday with some type of sickness - flu, I'm guessing. Large amounts of Gatorade and Tylenol have brought me back - at least enough to get out of bed.

Is it in you?

Is Good Service Worth $8 per Year?

I'm officially no longer recommending Hostway for domain registrations. The value is great ($6.95), but too many recent support issues have just sealed the deal for me. I love Dotster, at at $14.95 per domain, it's still a bargain.

When did photography start to lose value in the eyes of consumers? There is no one answer but there are several contributing factors . . .The first trend is wedding photojournalism.

Since the invention of photography, many practitioners have struggled to have the medium accepted and valued as art. Have the efforts of artists like Adams, Steigletz and Weston been in vain?

BTW: Yes I would pay $4000 plus dollars for a D2X body with a 20D sensor in it, and $8000 for one with a 5D sensor in it. If someone knows how to do that call me.

Lofi Woes

I've been struggling with how to deal with what we call the Lofi version of our sites. Every Flash site at BIG Folio includes an HTML version.

Styling that Lofi site has become a challenge recently. Originally, I styled it with some basic colors. Over time, however, we received ongoing requests to style it according to their Flash site colors.

My goal recently was to create a one size fits all style sheet that would use the Flash site's colors. That goal failed.

I've finally come up with a couple solutions. First, now available on new sites, is the ability to edit the CSS and HTML of your site.

The second, coming soon, will be a collection of CSS files to download and use in your site.

Take in More in Less Time with Google Reader

If you're a blog junkie like me, you need to be using a feed aggregator. Aggregators help you manage your rss subscriptions and read your favorite blogs without clicking bookmarks ad nauseum. While Safari and Firefox have some rss support in their bookmarks, if you really want to read a lot of blogs in a little time, you need to use an aggregator.

Until I got my MacBook Pro, I was using Thunderbird's subscriptions feature and found it very nice. My only complaint, albeit a serious one, was that a bug in Thunderbird caused it to download duplicate blog entries quite often.

With my MacBook Pro, I had to decide between Thunderbird or Mac Mail as my mail client. For various reasons, including the annoying bug mentioned above, I went with Mac Mail. That meant finding a new aggregator.

Enter Google Reader. Though I initially wasn't thrilled about using a web-based reader, I thought I'd give GR a try. I have to say, so far, its been awesome.

They've recently added some great features. One of my favorites is the labels feature - essentially tagging - and the new label selector (see image on previous post) is awesome. Since I don't only read photography blogs, I slap labels on my feeds to categorize them, and now can quickly select a label to filter my feeds.

If you're reading more than 2 blogs regularly, give Google Reader a try.
